The Rollercoaster of Parenthood Arrives
03.11.2008
Wow. So tomorrow Caleb will be two weeks old. Carrie and I are still settling into the idea of being parents. The highs of seeing him smile (even if it is just gas) contrasted with the lows of cries at 3:00am (and 12:00am and 5:00am and ...) make for quite an emotional ride, especially for Carrie. The past couple days she and I have had some great conversation as she's processed some of her feelings and the things that God is showing her through them. I feel incredibly blessed to see how God is shaping up our little family.
Caleb was weighed again today, and he is up to 9 lbs. so the initial fears of weight loss and hydration are long gone! Praise the Lord. Oh, and I also feel a major responsibility to give a shout out to Carrie's mom, Marty, who flew into town the day we got home from the hospital, and hasn't stopped selflessly serving us since. Thanks Marty--or should I say "Mi-Mi!"

This picture is quite symbolic. Weeks before my delivery, some faithful friends from Celebration! began a food roster. These people were volunteering to bring us a meal in the days after we arrived home from the hospital. So many of our brothers and sisters wanted to serve us, and we had enough meals to last two whole weeks. This stack of clean containers is representative of the hours and hours that went into providing our family with warm yummy dinners. We had everything from Congolese lamb with fried plantains, to a Southern style dinner of fried chicken with mac and cheese, to pizza. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

We captured these pictures during some tummy time. Caleb seemed to really be enjoying himself. Don't be fooled though, tummy time usually quickly digresses into screaming baby time! It was a wonderful opportunity to study and enjoy all his various facial expressions. My favorite thing about the close-up picture are Caleb's eyes--he can look at an object with such intensity and yetseem so peaceful. With all the time that he spends sleeping and crying a wide-eyed stare is so refreshing. Right now his eyes are a beautiful deep blue and we're anxious to see if they'll change and what they'll change to over the next several months.
03.23.2008 : EASTER!
So as you might imagine, Easter was pretty crazy between getting everybody ready, meetings, practices, sermons and such. While we unfortunately forgot to make time for a family photo, Carrie did spend a good 10 minutes taking pictures in search of the perfect expression. We decided they're all perfect.

One of the best ways for me to carry Caleb is in a baby sling. I wear it across my chest and he sleeps in it like a hammock. That night, we had a group of soon-to-be-married friends over for dessert and games. In this picture, Caleb managed to bring his hand in front of his face, and cover his eyes! It was as if he was saying, "It's late guys - enough with the partying - I'm out!" He's a good sport!

Ah, the blissful joys of napping! Enough said.
